Welcome to our “FAQ” section on the website, here in no particular order we answer your questions regarding the Elkwater Milehigh Tri.
Is it a trail run?
RUN – From Transition you will head W along paved Lakeshore Trail then up Firerock Road for 1km: take a good breath and water at the top of this and then head off into the bush. E along Firerock Trail up to the new section of Old Baldy (where you can stop and consume the view E over Elkwater Townsite). From here down the new section of Old Baldy to Horseshoe Canyon then along the W side trail of Old Baldy Campground to lower Beaver Creek Trail winding your way back to the finish line for a celebration!
Where do we swim?
The swim is a 500 m open water swim in the fresh waters of Elkwater Lake. It will be a shotgun start at 8:30 am off the main beach. Swim caps will be provided.
What is the Bike portion like?
BIKE – From main dock parking lot west then south up Horsehoe Canyon 4kms to Horseshoe Canyon view point. E along Plateau Trail, Mystery Trail, Upper Mystery Trail, the continuation of Upper Mystery will take you down a recently build single track section that will give you jumps and switchbacks to picnic table and a beautiful view NW across lake towards Medicine Hat. From here, you will go SW along Cobble Miner Trail crossing over Water Tower Trail and the winding your way through the pristine Pine Forrest you will find your way back to and down Water Tower Trail. At the bottom of Water Tower Trail you will jump W onto West End Ranger Trail and wind your way back down into Transition. If this is confusing to you; you should be me right now typing it! We will have volunteers directing you all the way along and you can also view an updated map here on this site “Download a copy of the Race Map HERE. (note this is a fairly big photo file and may take a while to download).
Where will the aid stations be located and what will they have?
The race drink is Heed. Cold water will also be at the stations. Aid stations will be posted at transition area, top of Horseshoe Canyon (5 km into bike route), top of Watertower trail (15 km into bike route) and at the 2 turn around points on the run.
Can I enter a team?
Yes, you can enter a two or three person team.
Do I need to wear a wetsuit?
No, however the water temperature is usually very “fresh” so we highly recommend wearing one for comfort and safety. If you don’t own a wetsuit you can rent one from the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre. Email email@example.com or phone 403-220-5038.
What does the entry fee include?
Obviously entry into a fantastic race with great volunteer support, a beautiful trail ride, and a post-race BBQ. You are also automatically in a draw for a Kona mountain bike sponsored by Cyclepath and an awesome stationary bike sponsored by Flaman Fitness.
When and where can I pick up my race package?
Friday 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at race headquarters in Elkwater (old interpretive centre) as well as 6:30 am – 7:30 am race day.
Are swim caps mandatory?
Yes and they are provided as part of your contestant race package.
What accommodations are available in Elkwater?
Elkwater Lake Lodge is located within the town – book early as it will fill fast. Camping is available in Elkwater. (both links are on main page of this website)
